Protect an Excel Workbook
for a Corporate Environment

Apply a Trial, Product or Subscription License Without an EXE or DLL

Henderson, NV USA - Aug 15, 2019 - Excel Software announced ExcelCL 1.0 to protect and license workbooks running in 32 or 64-bit Microsoft Excel on Windows. Protection is applied with VBA code that communicates with an online activation server using the Cloud License API. The protected workbook requires no DLL or EXE making it easy to distribute to corporate users with limited account permissions.

Cloud License is an Internet based licensing system that can be used from any desktop computer OS or mobile device. ExcelCL consists of User Forms and the CloudLicense VBA module that can be copied into any Excel workbook. To apply a license, an Excel developer configures the license on the server and assigns a few parameters in the VBA code.

The tutorial provided with ExcelCL allows an Excel developer to quickly protect any workbook with step-by-step instructions. ExcelCL supports Product, Subscription, Date Limited, Time Limited, Trial/Product and Trial/Subscription licenses. Developers with VBA knowledge can customize the licensing process or access advanced Cloud License features.

Users in a corporate environment can download and use a protected Excel workbook without IT support. An Activation dialog is presented when the workbook is first opened. Using a Serial Number provided by the workbook developer, the user activates the workbook for use on their specific computer. An activated workbook can be moved, copied or saved anywhere on that computer and functions exactly the same as an unprotected Excel workbook.

The same license can be applied to any number of workbooks so once one is activated to a specific computer, all workbooks sharing that license can be used. Protected workbooks can be distributed to other computers, but will required Serial Number activation on first use.

For a simple Product license, once activated the workbook can be used forever on that computer without Internet access. For a Subscription license, Internet access is required on first use during each subscription period. The license can be disabled by the developer if the user chooses to cancel the subscription. Advanced features like the ability to securely move a license between computers or to enable additional features in the workbook from the server will require temporary Internet access.

The Cloud License API is implemented by an online activation server. The workbook developer can choose between two options. Safe Activation Service 3 is an online monthly service used to configure and manage licenses. Cloud License Server is a self-hosted activation server that runs on a developer Windows or Linux based website.

Safe Activation can automate the purchase and Serial Number delivery process. The purchased Serial Number controls how many unique computers can be activated. An activated license can be moved between computers by the user without vendor assistance. Safe Activation can manage a subscription and deactivate the license if the user chooses to cancel the periodic payment.

ExcelCL is a $495 one-time purchase. It can be used to protect and license any number of workbooks distributed to any number of users with royalty-free distribution rights.

Safe Activation Service 3 is a monthly service starting at $45/month based on the account size required. There are no setup or cancellation fees and no long term commitments. Cloud License Server is a one-time purchase based on the account size required with upgrade options to a larger account as needed.
